- When purchasing a new home, always re-key the locks!
- Keep track of the keys to your home. How many are out there now?
- Do not leave spare keys in obvious places (under mats, above door, etc.)
- Don’t have any identifying information on your key rings. You don’t want to give thieves your address if they find your lost key ring.
- For extra security, think about installing high security locks with keys that can’t be duplicated without your permission (like: Medeco, Assa, or our Hicks Restricted).
- If you have a sliding glass door, be sure to install a “Jimmy Bar” or place a metal rod inside the track to keep someone from prying open the door.
- Keep all your doors and windows closed and locked.
- Make sure all entry doors have deadbolts installed in them.
- Keep your doors and windows clear of any obstructions (plants, shrubs)
- Install timers on the lights in your home. Utilize these when you are away.
- When vacationing, always have a relative or neighbor check on your home.
